The ability to jet off on the ultimate vacation without breaking the bank might seem like a distant dream. But with enough planning and self-discipline, that dream can become a sun-soaked reality.
Plan, Plan, Plan
As the notorious quote by French aviator and writer Antoine de Saint-Exupéry goes: “A goal without a plan is just a wish.” You can wish for a week-long stay at an overwater bungalow in Bora Bora until the cows come home, but unless you have your own personal magic genie, you’ll have to put in the work to make this a reality. One of the best ways to plan is to set savings goals. Write down what you’re saving for (in this case, an exotic escape) and then set your savings targets by date. This will help streamline the process and keep you on track to reach your desired goal.
Pay off your debt
This might seem like a no-brainer, but debt is often put on the backburner for the sake of instant gratification. But once you are no longer paying interest on your debt, that money can go toward your vacation savings account. Think of budgeting as a short-term sacrifice for an exciting, worthwhile gain.
Eat at home
Going out for dinner (or even lunch!) can be expensive. Instead of spending $15 on a designer salad, pick up a bag of lettuce and bottle of dressing from the store and make one at home. Where you shop can also greatly affect how you save money. Make a list of budget-friendly grocery stores and stick to them for the essentials. Just imagine the decadent meals you’ll be able to afford on your dream getaway.
